I fancy growing red onion this year as well as ordinary onion...I assume they are both similar to grow with no diference between the two apart form colour-does anyone know?

I have grown both and find they are not as easy to get going from seed as normal onions so I use red onion sets, other than that they are basically the same but reds tend to look a bit better colour wise in a salad

I've grown both aswell, dont remember finding much difference in growth myself, think it was "Red Baron" that I grew one year.
I think some of the red varieties are a bit milder. [IMG]

I grow a few red shallots along with white, for pickling. Colour is the thing they look a bit different. Red 'spanish' onions can be used for salads they are not so hard and hot tastewise and they look nice as well. Lovely day here in Wales.10am.

Thanks for that, I will go and check out red baron sets...I do an italian bread salad that uses red onion (along with one other), and the taste is slightly sweeter.
