The Venus Fly-trap catches its prey when hairs in the trap are triggered twice. The trap closes and the plant digests the juices of the insect. All that remains after the feast is a dry husk which will blow away on the breeze. Venus sits and waits for another meal.

Beautiful picture! i always thought sarracenias devoured the whole thing. Kind of like nepenthes (my fav). The bugs decompose in the liquid held in their.....pitchers ( can think of a better decriptive word, but too much of a lady to use it!) [IMG]

If it looks rude then it's probably nepenthes, or pitcher plant! makes my eyes water just looking at it.

Just found the label, bettyblue ... it's a Sarracenia hybride and it definitely looks rude, not at all like the picture above!

That's even different than mine which is in a recuperation period as I didn't keep it quite bog-like for a week!

    What's that second specimen?

The second one is not carnivorous, but the berries of the Italian Lords & Ladies - Arum italicum

I was wondering if that's what it was ... I think you've just solved another mystery! Two people have said that it was a weed! It is in Africa apparently! Interesting.

Vaguely reminds me of the Iris foetidissima ... we have them in the grounds at the IoW.

    Thank you, again!

We do have our own smaller version growing as a wild flower in woods and beneath hedges - Arum maculatum. It has all sorts of bawdy names in addition to Lords and Ladies. Perhaps its most used name is Cuckoo Pint, but even that is a shortened form of Cuckoo Pintle - pintle is a slange word for penis. The Victorians tried to replace the rude names by calling it "Parson in the Pulpit". A more recent name is the "Willy Lily" :D
