can you not just cut the cable then either crimp or solder in a longer length. I would have thought it would only be two core and you could simply just use auto cable with a length of heatshrink over the top.

    Hi WOO.
As pro Guard says, splicing is probably the easiest option though auto cable is a bit on the heavy side. I made up an extension flash cable several metres in length but used mini 8 coaxial cable which is just about3 mm diameter. Hi-Fi speaker cable (B&Q) is also quite light and flexible though not quite as neat a solution. I suspect the conductors in your existing cable will be too small for crimp connectors so soldering would be required. Due to the thin wires you need to keep mechanical strain off the joints.
What kind of connector is at the camera end - is it a mini jack socket or a D type socket?

Many years ago I purchased a bulb release that worked like a charm and screwed into the cable release socket. Still works now its about 20foot long.

Don't work on my Digi camera no where to put a cable release to.

I have exactly the same problem ..... my reason is that it is far too cold to sit outside and I want to be able to press the little button from some comfort :)whilst having the camera close enough to get a decent image
The cable is a thinner one than usual, and the fact that it is fairly short and that Canon do not offer an extension would suggest to me that the length is important to the cable's ability to function at all. For that reason I am reluctant to cut. I am looking at a wireless remote which will apparently work up to 5 metres

Thank you for all your Replies,I will follow them all up and and see which one is the most Feasible For me.Dave w My remote uses a 2.5mm(sub-mini)audio head and plugs into a 2.5mm Jack.
That is what the book says ,I was wondering if the connector below would work? Whis4ey I did consider the Wireless remote but as I understand It you have to be in front of the Camera for It to work. Many Thanks all

Just had a thought regarding my suggestion about using mini 8 coax. Digital cameras (some, anyway ) auto-focus on a half press of the shutter and fire on a full press, therefore any extension cable would have to comprise more than two conductors.
My last camera (a Nikon) used a wired remote, which cost an arm and a leg. My present Fuji seems to be one of the few digital cameras that can accept an old fashioned (and cheap) screw-in cable release.
whis4ey - I saw a design on the www for a wireless remote that used a stepper motor from a radio controlled car to press the shutter. Range was well beyond 5m.

Looks like you got it cracked WOO!!! I can't tell from the pic if it's a mono or stereo cable but my guess would be stereo which will give you a screen and two conductors. Only thing that could go wrong I guess is if you have a cross connection the camera will fire before focussing, but that should be easily fixed.

Woo ... I don't think that will work
I had a stereo extension lead for a pair of earphones which I thought would enable me to extend my own lead. It was much finer than the one you show. Even then, the sub mini jack was not a proper fit and it didn't work. I think the jack you show will be similar
I am, of course, assuming that your lead is a Canon or similar build.
Otherwise, please just realise that I seldom know what I am talking about anyway [IMG] hehehe

Keane Electronics sell a 2.5mm stereo jack plug to 3.5mm stereo jack socket (£1.99) Ref KA142 (an adaptor)
You could plug this into the camera and then fit a standard 3.5mm stereo lead into it
For the other end they sell a 3.5mm stereo plug to 2.5mm stereo socket (£2.49) Ref KA 147 (again an adaptor) You could plug the remote 2.5mm plug into that
Then it just depends on how long a lead you have with 3.5mm stereo jack on one end and a 3.5mm stereo socket on the other (similar to what you have shown)
It would mean that you didn't have to cut into your existing lead or solder etc and if it didn't work it doesn't seem too expensive
    Just an idea [IMG]

I have just visited the site and see that they also do a little lead (type KA142 into the search facility)
