Hi all, I am getting my Garden completely landscaped next week but will be looking at planting the shrubs / plants myself in the Spring as to save money instead of getting someone else to do it.

What I am not sure about apart from what actual plants to get is the estimated required budget needed. There will be approximately 26 metres of Borders once completed.

Has anyone done something similar and any ideas of what I should set aside?

Also, would anyone recommend getting timber sleepers for the borders and what kind of cost are they to install?

    Thanks

What idea do you have for planting? Mixed border / shrub border / herbaceous perennial border, do want any small trees adding?

@Perki Not sure yet. Mostly shrubs that don't require replanting every year or two with some perennials but with no trees.

Sorry, meant 26m in total of borders in Garden. Around 11.5m + 8m + 7.5m, so maybe 27m ish

@JWK No, normal metres. Just the combined length of all the borders to the sides of the turf along the fences.

@Danny30 I normally come at this from; my budget is XX so what can I get.
Presume you don't want to grow from seed, or scrounge divisions and cuttings from friends.
Cost essentially depends on how big the plant is, smaller plants are cheaper and in the case of shrubs often establish better, but take a while to fill out.
The width between fence and lawn will decide how big shrubs can get and to some extent which shrubs. You can grow climbers on the fences.
The other major factor is what sort of borders do you want and how much work you want to put into maintenance.
I would decide what I wanted and plan the borders accordingly then cost it.
Typically common shrubs at garden centres c£15.00, perennials £5 to £10, once you have decided what you want you may find mail order cheaper for some things.

Thank you @NigelJ. I don't want seeds as takes too long to grow. I don't mind some maintenance but not too much. Any idea how wide the typical border is?

We did our garden last year spending pretty much willy-nilly, a bit at a time. It wasn't until I totalled up for the year I found to our dismay we had spent £10K. This was plants, shrubs, bulbs, tools, compost, manure, chips, chemicals and even bird feeders and such. What a shock when we saw what we had spent.

They vary depending on the planting style you want. They would need to be in proportion to the garden size. If you want deep beds with a range of complimentary plants going up in height to climbers at the back they could be 6 foot or more deep. For a small suburban garden around 3 feet is nearer the mark.

Hasn't all this been planned by the landscapers, what are they actually doing?

I would ask the Landscapers about bringing in sleepers, they are very heavy, two man lift. Better to get them in and laid at the same time, that is bound to be cheaper than getting another team to come and install.

I'm not fond of lawns so I have deep beds full of plants where possible typically 2 to 3 m down to 1 m at the back of the greenhouse, due to the path.
As for plants I enjoy growing from seed and appreciate the more unusual species and varities I can get.
As with everything plants are getting more expensive and I can get carried away especially at specialist sales and nurseries.
The most I paid for a plant was about £25.00 three years ago and I haven't killed it yet.

@JWK I am levelling the garden and then removing 6 inches of soil and replacing with new topsoil. Not discussed anything else.
