I get loads of emails with subject "returned mail" or "undelivered mail" etc

Could it be possible that someone is using my computer to send out spam?

Have you looked at the "returned/undeliverable" mail?
It could itself be spam mail.

If you click on the mail item (in MS Outlook anyway) and then go to the EDIT menu and click on PROPERTIES a window will open and you should be able to see where the mail originated and the routes it took before being bounced back.

If your getting returned or undeliverable mails in the subject title then it sounds like a spam mail, look at the senders mail address, if it looks iffy then you can bet you life its spam...

Waco - don't open them, it may be worse than spam. This is one way of delivering a virus. People open it to see what it is. I delete all e-mail that is in the slightest bit odd. ie 'This one will make you laugh', or 'John recommended this to you'.

Dave and Mark are right - look at the properties. You can also do it with a right click on the header line. Sometimes you can see it is addressed to 50 people all at once.

Thanks for that info - somethig I didn't know.
I will be cautious in future if I think any email looks odd.

Peter I don't open them, I have started going to server before opening mail - there is just to much to download.

I also tried "Mail washer" which bounced unwanted mail back, but then I was informed that I was just cluttering up mail boxes.

dave I will have a go at looking from whence they came, I am pretty sure they are all from the same place.

I didn't find that worked in my MSO, Dave. But I right clicked on the email header and went to "options" where I got all this info - for wich thank you very much. I didn't know that either!

As another note - I never, ever open an unrecognised, unexpected email. Apart from the nasties that might be lurking within, it affirms to the sender that the email addy is live and encourages activity. [IMG]

Waco - returned mail is mail that you have sent out that couldn't be delivered, usually because the address wasn't valid. You should be aware if you sent those items out. If you didn't sent them then they are sinister - spam or virus.

I think in the computer world you only get a reply if you phone a £1 a minute help line.

Always set your mail client to "download header only". You can then check where it is from and if you actually sent an email out. If in doubt DELETE.

You could use Mozilla Thunderbird and train it to junk the unwanted emails. I use this and it junks around 80% of my emails.
