I was on holiday during the really hot weather last month and it’s also been in a bit of a windy spot recently.
I’ve moved it now to somewhere out slightly more sheltered from wind that gets direct sun first thing then shade from about 11am onwards.
Do I need to trim or prune or will it sort itself out now it’s more sheltered....or is it past the point of no return!

Yes its sun burn Saul....prob dried out too?

Not a lot you can do for this year but you have done the right thing by moving it to a more sheltered spot.

Next spring trim any damaged shoots, feed it and mulch it. Keep it well watered esp during hot spells.

So, no! It is not past the point of no return at all :)

Thanks Verdun, is it worth putting it in the greenhouse over the winter?

No....it is hardy enough. It will lose all its foliage anyway. :)

Sorry to hijack Saul's thread, but since we have the same acer wanted to ask if an area with a 5ft laurel hedge and 4ft fence will be a sufficiently sheltered one for mine. One side exposed (Northeastern, I think). Transplanted there a couple of months ago and seems to be doing well with lots of new, low growth.

Looks like it will be fine Nick :) It’s the new growth that gets hardest hit so yours is growing well it seems
I can’t grow the Japanese acers here....sunny coastal walled garden....except for one corner which is sheltered much as yours is I guess. It has been thriving there for 3 or 4 years.

Thanks Verdun, that's very reassuring! Thought it might be fine but always good to check... :)
