I have a huge rhododendron that has been smothered by huge, fragrant pinky white flowers, with each flower almost as big as my hand. Does anyone know what variety it might be?

    It is a beauty.

There are literaly 1,000's of species and many named cultivars/hybrids.
Even Rhodo experts standing infront of the plant may disagree as to the name.
They take into account when it flowers.
Shape of the flowers..bell shaped etc.
    Has it any perfume.
Is the bark flaky or coloured.
What the leaves look like ..... not to mention minute details of the flowers etc etc.

At best naming it would be a guess.

I suggest you look through a few pics to see if you can find one that looks like yours.

rhododendron large white flushed pink. - Google Search

Then forget all about trying to name it and just enjoy it.

Ok, thank you. It is the most frustrating thing about taking on a mature garden.. I do like to know what everything is!

I may be able to help with other plants ..but Rhodo's are hard.
We used to grow lots of them .... but at the end of the day the name really wasn't important.

However, if you are buying a new Rhodo...then that is different....it helps to know what to expect in future years...is it a dwarf or a giant. Will in flower in February or June.etc etc.

Enjoy your mature garden and all that is in it!
