I get fed up with the colours that website state that plants are (particularly my Hot Red border, where I am buying plants that are described as Red only for them to turn out to be Orange ... or Maroon). I thought I might buy a colour chart so that at least I could properly categorise my own flowering plants ...

    RHS Mini Colour Chart £26.00

"This quarter-size version of the full RHS Colour Chart is arranged as one single fan. It contains 244 RHS colours ..."

    or the full works:

    RHS Colour Chart £185.00 :yikes:

"The 896 colours are on 224 cards, arranged in four easy-to-use fans. Each colour patch has a central porthole which can be laid over the object being matched."

Bit of an eye watering price!!

The Azalea Society of America has some useful info, including RGB colour equivalents, and translation between RHS and their own colour codes.

as does The American Dahlia Society
    http://www.dahlia.org/index.php?mac...=books&cntnt01productid=7&cntnt01returnid=113
which has a 225 colour chart (skewed to the colours that Dahlias flower in :) ) for $60

    No cheap options then?

Wow those are expensive. How about artist's supply shops, something like this:

It's only £13.49 but even cheaper if you want 8 of them, you'll get 5% off :)

I can do you a good deal on 7 @JWK :heehee:

I like the look of that ... but I'm sat on the fence. If I'm going to do it would it be better/important to have names/Colour IDs compatible with the RHS ones?

Either that, or I need to find someone with an RHS set an "calibrate" my Artists one to the RHS one ...

There again ... if I can afford £13 for the Artists ones I can probably afford £26 for the Mini RHS one ...

I used to be indecisive, not I'm not so sure ...

Unfortunately I Googled a bit more ... and turned up this site, with loads of colour chart / converter links. I think he only started out trying to identify/name the colours of his stamps (Philatelists more of an anorak than train spotters?!). Perhaps I shouldn't delve too deeply into the subject less I become obsessed too?!

      Links

      and Converters like this one:

I may be gone some time!

Surely the trouble with those links is that it assumes that you have the correct chart with which to set up your computer screen? Kinda back to square one then, as those charts run out at about twenty quid!

A product for garden control freaks only!

Bet Christopher Lloyd never had one, and he was no slouch when it came to colour combinations. Mostly, I don't mind what colour it is: sometimes, (usually, even,) fantastic combinations happen by serendipity.

But then, I've got the sort of colour sense that would relish a border of reds where some veered to orange and others veered to hot pink. Possibly Kristen thinks differently?:snork:

Indeed. Although I did think that having the RGB would at least allow me to put a Computer Monitor colour-equivalent (square box) alongside a picture, so that it showed what colour it should be relative to what the camera captured. It would also give me the appropriate name (and Orange is definitely not called Red in the list!!)

My problem has been buying something described as "Red" and planting it only to find it is "Orange" ... so I thought if I posted all my plants on my Blog (a project I have been planning for a while), with photos, AND accurate colour descriptions / IDs, then that might help the next person that comes along.

Got sidetracked Googling some Persicarias ... I'm rather taken with ones that have markings similar to Red Dragon - found a couple that I liked on CGF only to then check my plant lists to see if the ones that I already have look "similar" in photos - only to find that I already own the ones that I had chosen! I suppose it is good to know what my taste hasn't changed !!

Kristen.....Why not go into your local DIY store and pick up all the freebie paint mixer cards, there should be just about every colour shade on those. :)

I love those paint mixer cards, the names are a riot of marketeer's indulgence, right now a few of the better ones from Dulux:

Sophisticated Sage, Love Note, Scent Bottle and Thimble Case

We recently used "Frosted Steel" for our Hallway, it's appearance is neither "Frosted" nor "Steel" - it's actually Lilac but they obviously think they would never sell any paint if they actually labelled it with the correct colour name ;)
