    Hi,

I've got Rhus Typhina seeds and the instructions says to scarify the seeds for 34 weeks. If I put them in them in the fridge now, then in theory that would take me upto October if they haven't germinated before then. Would October be too late to plant the seedlings out and if so, would I be better starting around August time so they'll be ready for next March?

Thanks @Sheal for the link. Instead of peat, I will need to use normal compost if that's ok?

      Scarify or stratify?

@longk The spelling on the piece of paper that came with the seeds is scarify, but I'm hopeless at spelling

I don't think it'll make much difference using compost Clum, it's as light as peat.

Longk, in the link I put up it suggests both. :)

That's kinda my thoughts. If it took 34 weeks to scarify I think I'd just buy a plant :heehee:
I think that they meant stratify for 34 weeks to simulate the long cold season of the north of America and of Canada. I'd just give them a few weeks in the fridge - use ice trays full of ice cubes to give them a proper chill (one day under the tray, one day refreezing the tray and so on).

Thanks @Sheal Compost is all I've got;)

@longk If I had known I had to do this, I would had bought a plant:gaah:, but at the minute I like growing from seed and just thought try this plant from seed. But in future I'll ask before I buy:ideaIPB:

It doesn't sound that bad. I had to do the same thing with Amsonia. It's just about kidding the seeds into thinking that they've seen the seasons. Don't forget to scarify the seed before you stratify it.

                Just an update.

Today, took the seeds out of the fridge and put the contents on a tray of compost. They are in my greenhouse with a cover over them to get them warm.

There is a slight snag with Rhus typhina in that it is very prone to suckering, rather like cherry.

@Oakridge Is suckering the same as suckers that you get on roses?
