I have only done very few posts before but thats because ive been a very busy lady. I have just moved from a flat to a house so this is my first garden! The garden is smaller than I wanted it to be but the house makes up for it. Below is the garden when I moved in and a few of the process ive made so far. : )

Over the weekend the sleepers went in and the rest of the fence was painted.

          Today the garden went from...

To this as it stands today.

Turf will be going in next week. I have 2 empty borders, 3 black container's on the back wall, 3 wall baskets on the shed and 2 wall baskets on the left fence that all need filling. I know I want to put strawberry plants in 2 of the wall baskets but the rest I have no idea. Complete blank canvas. Can anyone help me? I would like a garden that has interest in all 4 season's. ..if that's possible.

Sun comes up over the far left corner of the garden and sets in the near right. Soil is clay but ive put a lot of sand and compost on it.

If anyone can recommend flowers and shrubs that would be great

You've done a great job sorting out your garden! :dbgrtmb:

For the baskets I would suggest annual flowers, you can grow them from seed if you start now or wait and buy them from a garden centre. I'm not sure whether you are a beginner or not so would suggest that you leave it until May to buy them. As a general rule annuals shouldn't be planted out until the risk of frost has gone, around late May early June, the same goes for buying them unless you have somewhere frost free to keep them.

Can I suggest you put your area in your avatar box please, it helps members when suggesting plants etc., as some that will grow well in the south may not do so well in the north.

Climbing plants would help break up the bareness of the fences but you will have to give them support. For the borders...... small shrubs, perennial flowers, annuals and bulbs. Take a stroll around local nurseries/garden centres to give you ideas on what you would like. Anything you like the look of, or are not sure about, you can ask about here on GC for information, we're all willing to help. :)

I am loving your work! How long have you been breaking up concrete :phew: I'm completely new to gardening so not much advice but I found deciding on colours for the beds first then hunting down plants that were suitable, from my little knowledge there is a plant for everywhere and everything!

It was hard work but worth it. Now all of a sudden im stuck and dont know what to do flower and shrub wise. Think im going to pop to the garden centre today. If I buy the tiny little plug plants. Can they go straight out into the bed? Or can only things go out side that are already outside in the garden centre.

            Thanks for your help

Have a look on crocus.co.uk for fantastic planting schemes then source your plants cheaper elsewhere if u wish.

No don't plant tiny plug plants straight out, it depends what type of plant of course, some are very tough and hardy but most will need to be grown on to a reasonable size under protection (greenhouse, windowsill, cloche etc).

A GC is a good place to get ideas. Things to bear in mind are do you want evergreen (for year round interest), fragrance, climbers, maybe some apple trees against those fences or bedding plants (i.e. annuals that give lots of colour but only last for the summer). You could spend a fortune so just have a look to start with then when you get ideas on how you want it to look, we can help you with choices and maybe some cost effective ideas if you're on a budget.

When I first started by newly made beds I went to the garden center and just bought what I liked the look of... Then three months later had to move everything because it just didn't look right! Had a few casualties too because I didn't realise how strong the sun got on one particular bed as I had moved into a new house and didn't take the time to discover the seasons in my garden, how strong the winds are for example, if you are truly a newbie to gardening like me I would suggest you start with a few big items, maybe a climber, or tree, let that settle in and slowly decide what you want and where, it is frustrating because you want it now and after all your hard work i would too! But it takes a lot of time sitting in the garden to work it out!

Thank you all for your replies. Its been lovely weather here today so I have planted some carrot seeds and tumbling toms. The toms I have put on the windows sill but the carrots I just planted straight out....hope that's okay.

Also when I went to the garden centre today I bought this.

Nice looking plants, seems you have been bitten by the gardening bug :)

The first one (Azalea) needs an acidic soil. If your soil is alkaline then you'll need to keep it in a container in ericaceous compost :dbgrtmb:

                    Thanks everyone

Jwk its starting to bloom and looks like its doing well so think I may assume my soil is acid.?

In the far right bed not much sunlight gets there so ill be buying shade plants fir that bit I think....but whilst I was in the garden today I noticed there was sun in the far right corner. ..but I knew this was impossible so went over to it to look up to see how, it appears sunlight is reflecting if a house window....was wondering if that would count as the plants I put there having sunlight? ?

I know that could possibly be a very stupid question.

                    Rich
