There is a growing trend to 'grow your own', and rightly so both for environmental reasons, and for personal satisfaction and taste. However, I reckon garden centres are cashing in on this, and why wouldn't they? They are out to make a profit and if people will pay...

I once saw on sale for a about £30, a dedicated potato growing 'system'. All it was was a deep container with a couple of extra square things that you slot on top so you can add more soil. You could make something similar for far less cost and you'd get the exact size and shape you wanted, but hey, if people will buy it, someone will sell it.

I have stupidly bought Lettuce plants in the garden centre in late Autumn assuming they were Winter varieties ... they didn't survive in my greenhouse, so I reckon they were just any-old-thing ...

Lots of veg plants for sale that are in the "Don't transplant" category too ...

Doing themselves a disservice by selling things such as that ...

omg that is a huge rip off. I sold some plants this year at our local fete and only charged £2 for an outdoor melon and the courgettes maybe I should've charged more :D

    Project for today.

Make one sign to display out front

    "Pots of potatoes for sale"
    £5

I shall be rolling in it by the end of the day.
I have to agree with all your comments.
A typical case of rip of Britain as long as the punters will pay

Too true. Also there are often theoretically transplantable plants that have been stressed, and promptly bolt as soon as they are planted out. Best avoided all round.

Too true ... if they sold Pak Choi as having "Pretty flowers" maybe that would be OK.

I wonder how many newbies buy that, thinking "I like that from the Supermarket", and then wind up with the view that "This grow-your-own malarkey is really hard" ... pity if that is the case :(

That is a rip off, we can buy a 4 stone (25 kg) bag of spuds at our farm shop for about that price.
