Hey everyone was wondering if you could help with a particular problem planting area

My parents place in wales sits on the banks of the river dee so the back garden is the river bank

They would like to plant it up clumps of plants so it looks nicer and stops the bank eroding

Currently there are irises and they do intend to get more but would like some ideas on what other plants would cope with living on a river bank that spends 10% of the year underwater which can last for days.

Here are some pics so u can see what they are working with

weeping willows would help stop the soil erosion either end of the garden so doesn't block the view
are they allowed to use gabions , [IMG]

they could be used to create some reed beds or the like ....

I have a river as well , wildlife is amazing I have let the "cow parsley go crazy"

Thanks spruce they dont want any trees and already have gabions on the right of the last picture

I should of added they still want access to the water for the dogs so only want to plant in clumps with gaps

                Marsh Marigolds?
                Wild garlic around the trees?
                Watercress?
No plant expert just plants I have observed by our local river!

                  Sedges!
Not everyone's cup of tea, but, the are keeping my waterlogged-in-winter area looking lush (together with yellow flag and some white arums)

Thank you so much for the offer but they take ages to get anything done so even though they want to know what to plant it probably wont happen till next year

Although if they do get their bums in gear i will let you know

Thank you everyone for the suggestions i will be getting mum to google them so she can see if she fancies them or not

                        Thanks adendoll

There is already loads of wild garlic here. When we arrived yesterday and got out the car the smell was so strong it was liked being slapped in the face

The whole one side of the road is just wild garlic

Do they want some horsetail bamboo, I could post a root or two if you send address, this loves water and spreads prolifically, as I found out to my cost, I now have it in containers and it`s not doing as well, mostly because it`s not wet enough. This is the best picture I could find

Thank you pamsdish. Im afraid you put them off the bamboo by saying it spreads prolifically. They don't want a plant that will easily take over if they are not at the house for a while but thank you for the offer :-)
