Is it just me or is our good friend HFW a bit of a crook? I've mentioned before that I love his programmes and the causes he supports and even join in myself; however, just to use up some vouchers I went to the RC website and looked at what was available - pages and pages of eye-wateringly over priced goods! I finally found a dutch oven, the smallest one they did, at over 28 quid... then they add postage... and then they add VAT!! I think I'm going to get something if only to use up the vouchers (of which you can only use one per purchase) but holy mackerel it pains me to buy from a company so blatantly exploiting their loyal public!

I guess that's the nature of business. If someone will buy it, then someone will sell it.

The thing with river cottage, is it is 'eco', and 'eco' is a massive buzzword at the moment (and rightly so I think), but businesses always try to capitalise on the latest trend. You can't really blame them, everyone has to earn a living after all.

Its the same with all 'eco' related things. A year or so ago a young apple tree would have cost about £25 from the main retail suppliers (or £5 from Aldi or Morrisons oddly enough). Then there was a big media thing about trying to get more people to grow their own fresh fruit, and lo and behold, that £25 price tag went to £45.

It also seems unfair that wildflower seeds are often much more expensive than the more typical garden cultivars. Same thing I reckon.

i too like all things hfw and have most of his books and dvd's but am loosing a bit of interest to be honest because there seems to be all the same people on, it is always the same guy foraging, chillies, butcher, baker, preserve lady and so on some even have their own little 10 min programmes under the river cottage banner....just think it is going a bit stale

It's a massive shame as I think most people actually believe in his little crusades and enjoy his cooking etc But to stick that huge price tag on just because its sold by RC is a bit mean! Still, as has been said, if there's the need, someone will buy it (although I'm not convinced all his products are exactly 'eco').
Just to add a bit more... I got a RC bacon and sausage box for Christmas - sausages were excellent but the bacon a bit 'meh'; the kicker for me was that it wasn't even made by RC, its subbed out to a farm in the area but still given the RC price mark up.

Well, the good news is that I don;t have to worry about this any more as I've used up the vouchers and never have to buy a RC product again:) But I'll definitely continue watching his programmes - don;t forget the big fish fight tonight!!

[size=medium]Sadly, I think a lot of things that start as well intentioned end as a commercial racket.
I think Jamie Oliver went the same way.
The remedy is in the hands of the consumer - don't buy.

it is a shame because i would guess that hugh has been responsable for more people trying grow your own recently than anyone.....even his cookery courses and fishing and butchery stuff is all done without him even being there so the consumer is just paying for the rc logo.....

My Mate Glenn (known as Fear the Hands) went on a River Cottage cook what you catch boat fishing trip a few years back.

His write up of the day is on this page,

    http://www.anglersnet.co.uk/forums/River-Cottage-Catch-and-Cook-t5391.html&st=30

Now bearing in mind an 8 hour deep sea wreck fishing trip costs £40-50 per head. Have a guess how much he paid for this one.

Go on, Ziggy. Tell us. But whisper it quietly so that we won't be too traumatised.

    £230 [hr]
    Just watched Hughs fish fight.

Absolutly terrible, the amount of fish discards going on due to a completely useless EU policy.

I could never hope to catch a fish of that size from the shore & yet we see hundreds of tons dumped back dead in the name of "conservation"

Not the sort of conservation i'm familiar with.

I wonder what the famine inflicted nations of the World thought of that.

I like Hugh Fearnley Wittenstall until tonight. He has committed a heinous crime. He's publicised the virtues of Mackerel.

Mackerel is my favourite fish by far, and being so underrated it is cheap. If demand for it increases then my favourite fish will go up in price:(

    Shhh Hugh, don't tell everyone:)
