Good morning @HarryS that's a very pertinent Question;)

This is the answer from the local Sir Geoffrey Adams British Ambassador to the Netherlands

"By remembering our history we keep our friendship alive.

This is an answer by the local Council
So why did we celebrate this defeat? The events that happened on the River Medway 350 years ago led to the rebuilding of the British Fleet, which then went on to capture command of the world’s oceans, leading to the economic prosperity that we as a country still benefit from today.. It also signifies a strength of the current friendship of our Anglo Dutch relations.

This is an answer from local MP

So, why do we want to remind ourselves and, better yet, celebrate this awful defeat?
Because it led to the beginnings of English, and later on a unified, British rule dominating a quarter of the world.

This is an answer from Local BBC Correspondent
"Personally, I'd say it's important celebrate it in this country as an antidote to triumphalism - the idea that English, and then British, history has been a largely unbroken succession of victories.

Nearly 25 years ago, we went to Rochester on £1 a day train journey. We so wanted to see Dickens' house, but it cost. The men look at us, knowing we were counting the pennies, winked us and let us in. Always remember that.. When I was young, I always loved George Eliot, especially her Silas Marner, more than Dickens too. Memories ..

I loved the Rochester Dickensian Christmas Festival. Just my cup of tea.
