Morrisons supermarket has Water Lilies £1.99 to £3.79 plus a few other water plants.

I have three now in my small pond, two planted today, the other a week ago already has leaves showing on the surface. Real bargains.

Yes, I bought 2 water lilies about a month ago and they are doing well. They haven't had any more water plants for a while here.

    [IMG] Hi

I bought the white lilies from Morrisons - the £3.79 ones. Did you use that planting stuff that came with them or put them in aquatic compost as well? The instructions were a little bit confusing...

    thanks

    GP :D

Hmm i dont know how to use quote :)

Wow! i thought I had a bargain from B&Q for £4.95 after paying £13.99 from local gc (sort of established though..in a bag with 3 leaves?)But my leaves on the xpensive one are rotting with no new crowns, the B&Q is faring better but no signs of any leaves at all. I am SO knew to the pond building I dont know whats right or worrying!

The one I got fron B&Q had pellets of dried soil (if I read correctly) for the bottom, a tiny amount of aquatic soil for 2nd level and gravel for top..if that rings a bell?

Many years ago I read that using ordinary garden soil is fine for aquatic plants so thats what I have done this time, so far all are growing but I'll not be happy untill I see flowers.

It looks like the more you pay the more you get, my cheap ones were only small with a little light green growth, no compost or gravel, so I did buy my bag of gravel from the top shop, B&Q. :D :D

I think the aquatic compost contains more clay than normal to stop it dispersing in the water. The perforated baskets usually supplied, even with Morrisons, also help.
My water lilies are thriving too- hope I get some flowers!

garden soil should not be used because it contains other nutriants and things that make alagae and other undesireables grow

When you planted your Morrisons lilly, did you just use the planting stuff that came with it? That weird netting / brown / squashy stuff? My mum said that I should have added some compost but according to the instructions it just said use the squashy stuff.

Anyway, I have some growth already so I am sure it will be fine

I already had2 lilies from last year [which cost over £10 each and only had one flower each]. I made gaps in their containers and stuffed the new ones in with as much squashy stuff as I could fit in, and covered them with smaller pbbles than they supplied. One has spotty leaves and one plain.

My water lilies have lots of leaves and look very healthy but no flowers. I'm very envious of Kedi-gato!
Anyone got any tips, please? [IMG]

just a short note...maybe not everybody knows that you can do your first experiments with your pond plants in a big plastic container, as long as the water is kept reasonably clean...
