    Hi,
After lots of drainage issues in new build garden, builder came back and got a landscaping company to improve the drainage and they have now laid rolls of turf.
Next door neighbour also had their garden done and was completed the day before mine.
When looking at the two of them side by side and being in their garden, the quality of their turf looks vastly superior. (I don’t have a pic of their garden, only mine).
Much more life in, the rolls are straighter etc.
Am I overthinking it or should I get landscaper back out?

What should I look for to determine whether the rolls of turf are not as fresh, a bit dead?

Turf may yellow if stored too long. Its simply the exclusion of light. It should recover after a week or two. You should water it if rain is not received, but try and keep off the grass for several weeks.Once it establishes, allow to grow to 2", then lightly mow , reducing in height a little each week. There would be no harm in expressing your concerns to the builder/landscaper but its likely to sort itself out.

Keep an eye on your turf. It should have neat, straight edges and corners to every section and fit closely together with no gaps between any section of turf.
Landscapers do not like "going back to jobs" once the property has been sold. Your builder may have bought some cheap turves to keep you happy. Yellow turf means it has been stored for too long, if it does not green up in a couple of weeks time complain again. Keep it watered if the current rain misses your area. There should not be a noticeable difference between your grass and your neighbour's if they were laid at the same time. The builder might be fobbing you off on the cheap.

may be fobbing you off on the cheap.

OP here, thank you both for replies.

The company who came back to lay the rolls of turf are a landscaping company engaged by the builder so it’s definitely better than the builders original approach of throwing a load of grass seed down.

I called landscaper back out and told him of my concerns and in fairness he said my neighbours garden does look better, greener on the face of it. He said as my turf was at the bottom of the pallet and my neighbours was done the day before this is part of the reason why his may look better. All turf arrived the same day.
He said to give it two weeks and he reckoned both gardens will look more alike, so I will give it two weeks.

It is now down over 48 hours and I have made sure to water regularly as not been much rain. I have also stayed off the lawn and am spraying water from the patio.

I am a bit of a perfectionist so the yellow bits probably set me off.

I also noticed this morning what looks like something else growing among the grass, not sure if this some type of grass that looks different or is it something that really shouldn’t be in purchased rolls of turf. It is in the first two pics, like it had some head on it.

I think what you are showing is grass that has produced a seed head, not surprising this year where Spring has been unusually warm and dry. Once the grass is established, and these heads have straightened, it is likely that the first mowing will remove them. As you may know, there are many different grasses and also many different turf types chosen for differing applications.

If you have pigeons nearby they will soon discover the seed heads and start to remove them . When I see pigeons browsing on my lawn I know it’s time to reduce the height setting on the mower.

Thank you, so basically nothing to be concerned about. I must actually get on to the company who supplied the rolls of turf to find out what seed do they use in case I need to overseed etc. down the line.

Funnily enough, I have yet to see many pigeons in our garden, the odd one. Even though they would be in the wider area.

It is not uncommon for turf to be made up from a mixture of grass seed. As you are still talking to the landscaper, do as they suggest and wait a couple of weeks. If you are still not happy, stick with it until you are satisfied. Turf comes in different grades, from fine to coarse and the price varies according to the grade, the same applies to grass seed.

Turf is down 10 days now, been plenty of rain in the last 2/3 days, had been watering before the rain came as well.

Landscaper said to wait two weeks before giving the newly laid turf a first cut.
The grass is between 2.5 and 4.5 inches in parts. My lawnmower cuts to a highest length of 2.4inches, which would mean where the grass is 4 inches plus, I would be taking off more than the recommend 1/3rd, I presume that is fine? And I don’t need to go looking for a mower that cuts to a higher height.
            Thanks

Phew. Its grass, it grows , not worth getting excited over unless you want a bowling green.

You dont get a pristine lawn in year one and if its laid by someone else you wont get that kind of lawn if its not specified.

The lawn is your responsibility once laid, and I think you can expect too much if not specifying what kind of grass you want.
A developer is only going to supply grass suitable for a general purpose lawn, nothing fancy.
the kind of stuff for kicking around a football on.;)

having said that, dont expect something like a premier league pitch.

I think meadow grass has been used for your turf and the seed is courser than that used for a lawn, which is why it looks different to your neighbour's. I got caught out with this many years ago and since have seeded my own lawns when necessary.

I don't believe what you have been told. If you intend to question this again I think you'll have trouble proving it without the help of a specialist.
