i think I might like to buy my mum a rose plant for mother’s day. She hS no garden so it will have to stand in a pot near her back door. What kind of thing should I look for? How big should the container be? If I’d thought about it sooner I could have ordered something really pretty online. Now I’ll have to see what I can get locally.

    Thanks

Not being stingy, but would any of the bare roots from B&M, Factory Shop etc be ok?

I know very little about Roses, but Mr Woo is a rose expert, so I'm sure he will be able to help you. He recently sent me a patio rose which can be kept in a container. I haven't planted it out yet due to the weather but it's in the porch and doing very well. I would think something like that might be suitable for your mum. It arrived in a nicely packaged box too already planted into a pot.:).

Hi @Jack Sparrow I've brought several of those small roses in pots you can buy from Sainsbury's / morrisons in the past and they've never survived

They usually sell orchids for mothers day...in the right place they're beautiful plants and do last as my mom had one for years off me and perfumed :)

I’ve had a fruitless morning. Tesco list a Claude Monet on their website but it’s not available to order. I have no idea of the price of it. I went into the local Tesco Extra and they had no bare root roses at all. Maybe if they did, they had made way for all the Mother’s Day stuff. While I was there I called in Dobbies. They had a selection of patio roses @£6.99 ( I think) none of which inspired me. The other roses were all David Austin @£25ish.

Tomorrow I will be going back to The Factory Shop. Maybe I will pick up whatever they have in there. I would rather have something more spectacular than the norm.

I’ve looked at oranges and lemons and camaieux. Both available online. Considerably more expensive than what I was looking at. Would this sort of rose work? I don’t mind paying if I get the right thing. I’m sure once established, a single colour rose would look just as stylish. There is always the Waltz for £3 from the Factory Shop to fall back on.

@Jack Sparrow you can buy the Camaieux developed as this link shows but more expensive :)

Unlikely as they are designed to be grown in the soil, in the garden. Their tap roots would be long and not suit a container.

Search for Patio Roses and that should give you an idea of which type of rose can be container grown.

Maybe I should be looking at something else that isn’t a rose. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

'Super Trouper' Bush Rose - 4L Pot £14.99

I’m looking at this sort of thing. It says is ok in containers. I would have to wait 7 days if I ordered with these people. I already have an account with them. I might find something similar locally once I start looking properly.

Pretty rose! Is that a colour she would like?

Well, if you have to wait 7 days, that shouldn't be a problem. Doesn't your wife make cards? You could print out a picture of it and present it as/in a card for Mother's Day and then pop round again when it arrives: double fun!! :dbgrtmb:

Ok. For better or for worse, I have ordered a Super Trouper Floribundas bare roots for £10 including delivery. It should arrive by Tuesday. I’ve taken a chance and order it on Amazon. :fingers crossed:

I had better not wander around any garden centres for the next week as I’m bound to see something I like better.

The next question will be the size of pot I need to buy. :rolleyespink:

                          G.

Edit (sorry) At least I know how long I’ve got to choose a pot. I don’t have to rush out and get one tomorrow. I know exactly where I’m going to get it from. :dbgrtmb:
