Out of all my roses planted bare root last winter two have hardly grown at all :(
The roses around them are thriving and all have received feed and rose clear.
Do i lift them and give them some more tlc? If so how?
One is a Harkness Great North Eastern the other is Goldrush. They are literally a few cms tall with a few leaves.
    Many thanks

Just read the wonderful woos post on pests and diseases and maybe there's something in soil inhibiting growth? I am going to lift them and plant them in clean compost and prune them as woo shows to prune bare root arrivals as that's how big they are :(

Were they planted in soil that had roses previously?

If not I don't have any other thoughts, sorry.

Good morning Chimneyrosega from what I can see from here your soil looks to wet and black but I only have the photos to go by,what compost are they in and how large are the pots, and how much sun do they get, questions, questions I know but I hope with the answers we can help you my friend:)

I took the liberty of turning and enlarging your photo, hope you don't mind just trying to help you find the answer:)

              hi woo
thanks for taking the time to reply. the weather has been very wet here :( the two roses with white labels are the ones i am worried about the other little babies are this years cuttings apart from the big beast at the end - lol.

they are in full sun now (if we get any) wilko multi-purpose compost, the pots took the roots with space planted like the picture shown in your planting roses post with the roots carefully lied out to the side of the rose rather than in a deep hole?

they were in med clay full sun in my back garden treated with rose feed and rose clear during spring and summer like my other roses.
can u see from the seccond pic the roses both have great roots but the stems are either brown or have stress marks on them?

I have cut them down now and am hoping they will survive :(

              i bought some bone meal??
how can i dry the soil out i haven't got a greenhouse?

thanks kirsten - no roses in soil previously and i have had a good dig around this am no obstructions in soil like big bricks or anything.

this is great north eastern in the summer can u see how tiny the flowers were?

Hi Chimneyrosegarden you say they have hardly grown yet you had to cut them down, just how much did they grow originally,it would help me to know,if it were me I would purchase some John Innes No 3 repot them and keep them inside somewhere no need for any heat and then once rooted you can plant them out but not in the same place:)

Just a little tip for the future;)
I always look closely at my bare-root roses when they arrive to see whether they are alive or dead. Bark that is moist, feels soft but firm to the touch and has a green tinge is alive. Bark that is brown and hard with cracks probably is dead; a sign the roots have dried out. Open the plastic wrap and remove the sawdust around the roots. A quick inspection will show roots that are dormant but alive as they bend to pressure without breaking or being limp. Shriveled, broken or dried out roots are signs of dehydration, which is fatal to moisture-loving roses.:)
