Another question (sorry) and I will now highlight myself as a particular kind of stupid - it won't be long before I'm banned from this forum because you think I'm taking the mick - but here goes: I bought a climbing rose from Poundland, doubting it would come to anything, but credit where it's due (thank you Poundland) it has grown and had lovely big pink flowers in the summer. It's about 40" tall now. So. Where the flowers were, there's now roundish things that could possibly be seed pods? Am I correct? Could I grow more roses from them? Also, I was advised that when the flowers are dying I should pull them off - is that right? (I realise this is more than one question - profuse apologies and thank you :sofa:

If you don't ask questions Lynda you won't expand your gardening skills and that's what GC's all about. :) It doesn't matter how much knowledge we have as gardeners there is always something new that comes to light and as we know it's and endless subject.

In answer to your question, yes they are seed pods, known usually as hips on a rose. The chances of the seed coming true to the parent plant are very slim as most are hybrids and they are also very difficult to propagate. You can take cuttings from the roses which will grow true to the parent plant.

It's usual to snip the flowers off with secateurs when they fade, taking them back to a leaf joint further down the stem if possible and depending on the type of rose. As with most plants if you 'dead head' the plants regularly it will encourage more flowers to grow. :)

Hiya, thanks so much for taking the time to explain all that, I really appreciate it a lot x I've heard this term "deadheading" before (when I was growing up in Newcastle a deadhead was somembody who smoked too much cannabis!) and will remember to do that in the summer. Thanks agin for the info and I hope you have a good day x
