Hi all on wed I got a postcard through my door saying 14p underpaid but £1 handling fee to collect mail.

Again today only 5p underpaid and still this handling fee.

Was out when post was delivered I am really angry about this as I will still have to get my self down to the post office and I dont know what it it it may be a rubbish I dont know .

Hopefully I can get a chance to see what it is if I know it looks important will obviously pay.

    But still not happy.

Hi Sotkat.I had the same problem this week with seeds sent from one of the members on here. They had put on a 1st class stamp, but when it was delivered I was out and my neighbour paid the handling charge. That was £1 for a 5p under charge.I am so angry with Royal Mail. What it means is that we are all suppossed to get in our cars with our letter/s and drive to the nearest Post Office to get the said item weighed. So as well as having to use the car,we are all polluting the atmosphere.Talk about rip off Britain. No wonder people are leaving these shores in their droves :(

Well lets see if I can see if it looks as if its important mail or not.Deciding factor if i give them the money or say dispose they might charge for disosing.

I do feel angry my MIL sent me a card with a first class stapm she thought was enough she is no tclose enough and able to walk to the PO and yes it as 14p underweight and I had this handling fee of £1.

They are milking it I think not fair.

Well, I know it doesn't answer incoming mail, but for our outgoing mail, you know that you don't have to drive to the nearest PO. You can weigh your letter/package/parcel on your kitchen scales, check with the Royal Mail site and even print off your own stamp! But, of course, you gotta post it anyway and if it's too big to go in a street letter box, then you've still got to go to the PO! So what's the diff?

I use this sytem all the time as I sell flags and stuff via my website. It's easy-peasy IMHO though I do agree those underpayment charges are totally OTT.

I think what's causing the problem is the normal letters, MMD - if they're just slightly overweight they're getting these charges. I do the same as you, as I'm lucky enough to have a little local sub-post-office, so I always check anyway, but I can imagine it would be a pain for anyone who had to walk everywhere, and who didn't have a handy place like that.

I didn't know about the printing off your own stamp though - I'll investigate that, as I often sell stuff through Amazon Marketplace, and it's often over a Saturday night that I get in an order. So thanks for that!

Pal,no your seeds came through ok with the stamp that was on it.It was some Agapanthus seeds that must have weighed too much for their system. There is now way I am going to take a set of kitchen scales with me when I go on holiday to weigh my postacards with or without the stamps on them to see if they are too heavy.I think it is all a fiddle just to squeeze more money out of the people that prefere to send their letters by Royal Mail,or who are not on the net :(

It was not the weight it was the length too long so it was 5p over 1st class.

Todays mail was along card from my friend but yes she did put on a 1st class stamp but it was not large stamp seemingly a difference.

But we also need to use PO in the rural area or they will close.

Ah yes - the new "average letter" "large letter" scam. About two or three days after it came in, I sent an envelope full of used stamps to a friend for his charity. I'd put them in a padded envelope which was of the large variety and would have costs silly money to send so I took it home and repackaged it into a smaller envelope, checking it with the card tester the Royal Mail sent everybody. Then, when I went to the PO I checked it in their plastic do-dah and it still went through ok though I had to make sure it was flattened a bit. But when I got to the desk, the girl just tried to shove it through with one hand so all the stamps got mushed up one end. And she would NOT flatten the package again! In the end I insisted she sent for her boss and he just shook it and fed it through with both hands as easy as pie! If I recall the difference in price was 45p/£1.35!!

Also, Dendy - if you're sending anything sizeable from Ebay, do you know there are couriers on there giving really fantastic deals on shipping? Just search ' parcel delivery '. One of them will ship a package up to 30kgs for £4.25 inclusive of VAT?
