Did it 9.30am - 10.30am today. I think the birds knew they were going to be counted as quite a few seemed to have gone awol this morning compared with what we often see.

Blackbird - 3 (there are often 5 about)
Collared Dove - 1 (usually appear as a very devoted couple!)
    Robin - 2
    Blue tit - 1
    House Sparrow - 4 (there's a gang of around 7 normally around)
    Jackdaw - 2
Starling - 14 (heck of a job counting them!)
    Chaffinch - 1
    Woodpigeon - 1
    Coal tit - 1
    Rook - 1

I deliberately spread a quantity of food out this morning to encourage birds to come down and be counted, yet got just 6 in over an hour, so will try again tomorrow. I have however noticed, at weekends, that birds do NOT seem to come down so much as during the week and when our garden is literally a mass of different birds.

I think our birds know when it is a weekend because there seems to be a lot less. Whilst I was home nusing by broken hubby and my broken knee, I noticed that we had lots of birds come to the bird table during the week.

Do they go somewhere else during the weekend?

I was going to do the bird watch this morning but Oscar the cat decided to do it instead. So I had to do it this afternoon whilst Oscar slept.

I filled up all the feeders (seeds and nuts) and sprinkled some on the ground. Then waited for the word to get out that there was fresh food.

    15 greenfinches
    5 chaffinches
    7 blue tits
    4 sparrows
    1 dunnock
    2 long-tailed tits
    1 great tit
    4 magpies
    1 robin
    1 thrush
    3 woodpigeons
    1 wren
    1 crow
    3 blackbirds
    1 wagtail
    1 greenwoodpecker
    1 greater-spotted woodpecker
    5 pheasants

The finches and tits sit in the willow tree so are easy to spot at this time of year.
The doves chased the magpies away.
The crow wasn't too happy with the pheasants wandering around and didn't stay.

    Hi Dave

the woodpeckers are resident in the garden and the pheasants spend most of the day (and year) in the garden. We rarely see wagtails or long-tailed tits, so that was just sheer luck.

The others are around because I put out so much food but are a lot more cautious since Oscar took up residence. He never chases the birds outside but will have them, like a shot, if they venture into his greenhouse. The pheasants are so used to him that they don't even run away when he walks past them. He's also very tolerant of other cats but doesn't allow rabbits into the garden :thmb:
