Hi girliecook. A bit early yet for planting out your 'runners', in fact, I still haven't sown them yet. A frost can still hit any time from now until the end of May, which is when I would advise you plant them out, unless you have some means of giving them protection if needed. As for the second part of your question, you'll only get an e-mail if you receive a PM, so you'll have to search your thread. Cheers...freddy.

The trouble with putting Runners out early is that you have to put up all the cames / whatever to support them, and then it is very difficult to put fleece over them to protect them from frost.

But if you don't plant them out them they become a tangled mess, and get a severe check when planted out later anyway ...

I would plant out and sow some more "just in case"

When you post a new topic there is a checkbox (below the box where you type):

    "Thread Subscription - Notification Type"

where you can choose "Instant Email notification" when you get a reply.

Also, you can set a default choice in your Profile:

From the top menu - "User CP" : Settings and Options - Edit Options : Messaging & Notification - Default Thread Subscription Mode

choose Instant / or Daily - whichever suits you best.

When I plant out climbing beans I use plastic lemonade bottles with the bottoms cut off as mini cloches for the first week or 10 days.

Yes. my runners are out and some are about three feet high and looking strong.
I know theres still risk of a frost but I am prepared.
My single row is along the well sheltered south facing wall of my garage. One cane per plant x 20 odd plants. Each cane is so planted as to tension against the wall, so if a frost is forecast its a simple matter of laying the fleece alng the top of the canes and pinching it with each pole against the wall.
I really hope theres not a frost.............and I get away with it.

I usually grow about 120 plants in the garden and plant out my first batch of beans towards the end of April. Sometimes they survive (for the last five years that have all survived) and sometimes they don't but I grow lots of bean plants in succession so just replace them if the frost gets them.

Last year we were eating runners in June :gnthb:. Planting them out in succession also means that they reach their peak growing time in different periods. The early planted ones do tend to slow down before the late planted ones and run out energy before the frosts come. all the surplus beans are sold for charity. :)

I can protect the early ones from frost if I need to as I grow them in rows and cross the canes over at a height of 3ft. Where they cross over I put run a cane as a cross bar and can then peg fleece to the cross bar. It only takes a few seconds :thmb:

The other advantages of putting the canes this way is that the beans growing on the top half of the canes hang outwards so are easier to pick and the canes are more flexible and can resist the strong winds that we get at that end of the garden.
