I notice that a runner bean plant has come through this year from a previous plant of last season.

Is it poosible to leave plants and get a crop (even small) each year, we live in a mildish area and it looks like plants can get through a winter?

If so which varieties would do best?

I've read on here before that people have managed to get new growth from last years runners. I'm not sure if there is any advantage, is your volunteer bean any more advanced?

Not at the moment, although it is a container grown plant and this year it has french beans and sweet peas to compete with.

Runner beans are perrenials in their native environment but are not frost hardy. There are new varieties being tested that are being bred for frost hardiness - but I wouldn't hold your breathe :hehe:

Some plants do survive the winter if it has been mild. I don't attempt to try it but I know that last year Kandy had at least one plant survive and continue growing. You may want to ask her how well it did in comparison to new ones. :thumb:
