I will preface this by saying that these are old photos...

Some here may remember me tacking these large thieves last year:

Well, yesterday I spent a considerable chunk of my day tidying the lower trunks up and the ground under them as well, mostly because we are intending on burning a load of garden rubbish today.

The resulting space needs 'something' to scramble right up those trees (and even swamp them, if it so wishes, as I hate them with a passion) - there is a fair bit of ground at the bottom of them, between the trunks and the boards that I have lining the edge of the grass, and I have wood in the shed that should be sufficient to build some sort of planter/barrier to hold a depth of compost/soil to get whatever I choose to get started.

The question is - what? I was thinking maybe Russian vine (mile a minute) or Virginia creeper?

Not overly bothered about it being evergreen, but would like it to grow up those trunks - happy to stick 2 or 3 plants in as needed too

Think you may be optimistic in growing 'undergrowth' beneath such trees, do you see it in the wild ?
Best hope might be to place a trellis to posts in front (by 2 metres +) and then growing against that. There are evergreen honeysuckles which may be thuggish enough to survive in what is a plant unfriendly environment, if they are far enough forward to get sun light, moisture etc

What about chocolate vine, Akebia quinata? We had it growing on the north side of our polytunnel and it did very well. We then had a new tunnel (bigger) so it was removed and planted in the "wood yard" to climb up a fence on the west side with the east side shadowed by a magnolia grandiflora and a Tracycarpus fortunei (both of which are enormous).

There are any number of thugs that will do the job, FC, but how are relations with the neighbours? Clematis Montana would give you scented flowers but looks deadly in the winter, Trachelospermum is evergreen which would be useful for cover low down when tied in.

Indeed, a very fair point - I could plant in the fenced off area and allow whatever to scramble over, or if it is enough of a thug, I will happily build something to give it a decent depth of compost to get itself going

Relations have thawed somewhat - these trees are at a part of the garden where I don't think a climber on them would create much of a problem, certainly with next door.

Montana definitely appeals, just because I love a clematis - we've already got a couple further up the garden. I also like the look of Trachelospermum.. wondering if I could have one at either end so they mingle?

Bit of an update - I went to the garden centre this morning, and got two Trachelospermum and one clematis.. not a Montana sadly as they didn't have any.. I cannot currently remember the variety, but will post back later.

Here is the area cleared out a bit:

I am thinking of putting some pallets, cut in half, in front of the trees to make a sort of enclosure that I can then add a few really large pots behind to get the plants started... once they get a grip, cut the pots away and fill in around them with compost/soil...
