A colleague, who obviously thought I knew rather more about gardening than is actually the case, asked me about re-using some ground which used to be under an aviary.

He has a small child (well under school age) and one of the reasons for wanting a veg patch is to get her to understand where food comes from. He did say the grass grew rather well there!

    Any advice?

    Thanks

    Steve

Hi Steve. I'd be VERY surprised if there was any problem with the soil, given the fact that it was three years since it was used for keeping birds. I myself (many years ago) had an aviary, and I can think of no reason why anything toxic would be used in such a situation.

    Cheers...freddy.

I should have said, the 'poop' itself should be no cause for concern as birds are non meat eaters (unless they kept Vultures :) ), only seed and fruit.

Tell him he's a lucky begger and to count his blessing as far as fertility concerned. Just wish I still had a source of fresh bird manure for the veg plot!

    Thanks people.

My mate now knows what he's going to be doing over the next bank holiday weekend.
