A real burst of sunlight! Pot Marigolds are wonderful plants to brighten up the herb garden. The young leaves and petals can be added to salads, but the real value lies in the antiseptic qualities of the flowers that are used for ointments, cosmetic creams and tinctures.

Nasturtium leaves and flowers also add a fresh, slightly peppery taste to salads and sandwiches. The seeds are antibacterial and are used to treat urinary tract problems and bronchitis. Nasturtiums grow on the poorest soil, make a carpet of colour and attract all the blackflies away from your roses. Grow them as companion plants in the kitchen garden and say goodbye to blackfly.

Nasturtiums come in red, orange and yellow. I love this deep red, crushed velvet one.

HOrnbeam, the deep red nasturtium is lovely, it almost looks like a double. I've only ever seen the more common yellow and orange. What's it called?

Sorry Sheppy - I don't know the name as I just bought a mixed packet of seeds.

I love nasturtiums, I trained some up a fence this summer until the ivy can take over, they've really lifted a boring corner around the compost bin.

Nice poems - my favourite is "the cherry tree", even if there are a couple of words which I don't know the meaning of.

Hi Miraflores - do you mean "score"?

"Now of my threescore years and ten
    Twenty will not come again,
And take from seventy springs a score,
It only leaves me fifty more"

I know that one. I was more referring to: "bough" and "Eastertide"

What lovely lovely photo's. Hope you don't mind but I've set the 4th picutre as my 'wallpaper' on my computer. I love nasturtiums and grow a pot of them every year. Don't seem to last long for me though :(
