What a harvest!!!! The size of some of those spuds ... just one of those big ones would feed a family in roast potatoes for one Sunday dinner :thud:

I was watching the video that follows, where another guy grows his potatoes in wood shavings and coffee ground...won't they end up tasting funny?

I wouldn't think so @miraflores . I seen James Wong mention coffee grounds yesterday and why they shouldn't be used... I didn't read the article though. It's in the guardian.

Dan is a member here, although he has not posted for a few years.

I grow potatoes in containers as well as the ground, but just sarpos as they are fairly bulletproof so can keep growing even if our site gets blight which it does most years. I got these square drain parts of the back of a lorry (literally) for a couple of quid, they stack so are ideal to earth up with and extend the growing space.

I also have a some half barrels approx 100litres.

I harvested between 15-28lb from each one this year.

I have found a good supplier of the 30 litre pots with handles @ £2 each too, so I have bought 15 to add to my containers for next year as a few of my present ones are being turned to grow carrots next year.

                Steve...:)

I may have a go at growing Sarpo in containers next year for a bit of fun . My last attempt at container spuds cost about £6 per kilo !
I presume Sarpo seed spuds are readily available ? And I would start chitting them about when ?

They are easily available in Garden Centres or online Harry, I have grown Sarpo mira for the last couple of years and they have been the best ever maincrop spuds. Both years have been bad for blight but the Sarpo series are resistant/tolerant, that means you see a few black blotches on them but it doesn't seem to affect their yield.

The wisdom is that there is no need to chit maincrop but I do anyway, as I'm chitting the early variety at the same time. I just think it gives the plants a longer growing period.

For containers the recommended Sarpo variety is kilfli - it's an early variety and I've never tried it. I'm happy with Winston as a first early which I grow in old recycling plastic boxes. They did extremely well this year and being early they have finished growing before blight becomes a problem.

Forget to say - you start chitting them mid Feb onwards - aiming to get them planted around 6 weeks later when the chits are around 2" long. You need to chit them on a sunny cool windowsill or in a frost free greenhouse. Too much heat and/or dark makes the chits grow long and thin - not good!

Thanks John , I'll add sarpo to my 2018 plant plan and get my seed potatoes early Feb. I'll plant them in a couple of 30 litre trugs I have. :blue thumb:
