Whilst clearing some dreaded ivy yesterday that was covering a fence panel. I managed to "rescue" what looks like a climbing rose. I've tied it out of the way for now, and am going to fell the tree, can the rose be saved and if so, how do i go about pruning ?

    Any help appreciated !

Poor little plant I think I'd be tempted to wait until warmer weather before pruning back heavily just in case. Perhaps now the ivy has gone it will thrive a bit better, must have been a struggle for it.

I would reduce it by about 1/3 to stop any wind damage to the roots - and give it a good feed - general purpose fertiliser, Its probably been struggling for food as well as light - roses are greedy feeders.

I wouldn't cut it back hard til the worst of the cold has past say end of February - then prune each branch back to the lowest bud. As shoots develop then start training them - try for a fan shape, so that you have hoizontal growth to provide leaf and flower lower down -

Well I took the plunge and chopped it right back.

After a week there's a promising abundance of new shoots !

I piled up wood ash around base and added liquid fertilizer.

Maybe some life in the old rose yet ? Pics to follow when i can get to it !

Well, Fran, if you can't identify it I think it's going to have to be Liz, whom I haven't seen for a while. You two are the "rose people" to me.
