At the moment I am clearing my garden of old logs and trees. Cutting them down for my wood-burning stove. This is leaving me with a lot of sawdust and it seems such a waste, can I have any suggestions on how to maybe use this stuff? I am assuming it can't go into my compost bin.
I dont see any reason sawdust cant be put on the compost, as long as it is well mixed in with the rest, and not put in big clumps. Remember that some evergreens have toxins, and sawdust from those must be left a little longer than other composted materials to give these time to break down.
You could always burn the sawdust and then you should end up with wood ash which is high in potassium which you could add to the compost heap?
The trick to burning sawdust is to get it to burn smokeless. Assuming that someone has access to good welding/cutting equipment, its easy enough to make such a burner. The design for such a thing is almost forgotten now. I find it sad that we forget the old knowledge.
