My sister asked me if it was okay to put sawdust on the flowerbeds and I was a bit stumped. I can't see any nutritional value, but perhaps it's okay as a mulch. Any advice?

Don't! It is to fine textured for mulch. Put it in the compost to rot and it wil be perfectly ok.

It robs the soil of nitrogen as it rots down
So I say no as well.

I agree with Pete regarding nitrogen, but I'm sure I've seen it recommended as a top dressing for ericaceous fruit bushes e.g. blueberry, probably because it is acidic and helps reduce any alkalinity.

If you put it in the compost do it gradually to much at a time will form a solid lump.

Thanks, folks, I'll tell her to compost it then (a bit at a time).
