B&Q had a decent looking lawn scarifier for £69.99 on offer today.

Ive seen them available for hire for about £40 per day from HSS.

If anyones thinking about hireing (hiring?) one, it might be worth buying rather than renting.

There is a big difference. B&Q is more of a lawnraker and will not penetrate the soil. HSS will go about 1/2" into the soil if you so desire, but better to do this in the late summer/early autumn

There has been some discussion recently on this subject George. http://www.gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/scarifyingi-t26395.html
I still suggest that it's okay to scarify in the Spring. I've just done about 1000 sq metres of lawn for a client. It took all day with two of us working hard, one on the machine and the other carting the thatch and moss away with the trailer.
And I agree with you Hasbean, the hired scarifier chopped into the top half inch or more of topsoil. BTW, I got the machine from a local hire shop and it cost just under £30, including VAT, for the day. Although not sel-propelled, the action of the blades pulled it along and it was incredibly economical, using less than half a gallon of petrol. I doubt the B&Q one would do the job as well.
