Is it too late to scarify my lawn now? I understand that this should be done in September. Would be grateful of any advice.

    Thanks...

The problem with scarifying now is the grass growth is sluggish and it will take a long time to recover, also perhaps weakening it and allowing fungal disease in.

Best to do it early spring after the last frost, when the grass will be quick to recover and will be rejuvenated by the process. Apply lawn sand or moss killer a fortnight before you scarify.

Having scarified i would take the opportunity to over seed.

RYDALL,In this wet and frosty weather keep off your lawns. Scarifying will only rip out grass roots and create mud in these conditions. I was given this advice from a very qualified and experienced groundsman who also advised me to apply an Autumn weed 'n feed too.

The disease aspect is what I was thinking about ProGard. It has a lot of thatch and moss so it would leave the lawn quite bare I feel.

Will carry out in spring as you suggested.

    Thanks

Thanks Nick. A groundsman should know shouldn't he!

    PG,

I can understand early spring (March) but its a bit more difficult to predict the last frost. Presumably it would be a long cold spell that would give problems. :-)
