I've been asked to scarify a friends lawn for them and was wondering when's the best time to do it?

    When it's dry?

    Before or after mowing?

    Any other tips?

    :)

    Hello there :)

Ideally the lawn should be scarified in autumn, if necessary to do now I would use mosskiller first and after a couple of weeks scarify. Best done when ground is dry aso as not to rip up any new growth. May take a while to recover though.

Mow before, ensures that all the moss is got, and after to get any bits left behind.

Many thanks. They want it done now, and also another person wants it done this week.

I didn't realise it should be done in Autumn not Spring.

I'm not sure I completely agree with it being better to scarify in the autumn. Ideally, the lawn should be scarified both in autumn and spring though I doubt anybody but groundsmen and perfectionists would have the time or inclination to do a large area more than once a year.

I'm about to scarify about 1000 square metres of lawns at a garden I maintain. (This will be about a week after I've treated it with mosskiller.) I would have done it in the autumn, but as you need at least a couple of weeks of dry weather, the continuous wet made it impossible.

I know that the lawns are going to look ratty for a while after I've done it, but hopefully the grass will be growing fast and recover quickly. So, I think it's okay to do it now, especially as the weather seems more settled for a while:thumb:.

Fully agree that scarifying now is not a problem. mow before and after and in 2 weeks it should look OK again. Matbe water after if we get no rain.

Thanks, I've done it and it does look a bit shocking but the lawns been neglected for over 2 years so that was expected. It's certainly done what it's supposed to.
