In times gone by, the most exciting school trip we had was a day to Marwell Zological Park. Boy, was that a major coup for our school!! AND we were allowed non school uniform, but had to abide by a very strict dress code.
I am currently packing for my oldest (yes, I am packing  ) for 4 days in Itlay. Staying in Sorrento, and going to Vesuvius, Pompeii, Herculaneum, Sulfatara (the sulphur pits), Naples, and generally a jolly good time. OK, he's 17 and this is for his Geology A level. Its not fair!!!!!!!:cry3: I'd love to go there, but cant afford it as I'm too busy paying for the ungrateful liitle blighters to go swanning off everywhere.

What "exotic" school trips did you all get to go on????

Got as far as Boulogne in one direction and York in the other, nothing more fancy than that.

I'd love the Geology trip too, our geol field trips consisted of going round a few quarries in the Weald & a trip to Kimmeridge.

Cenarth castle, mainly. Because we lived in a geological area the teachers didn't have to bother taking us anywhere. Chiz.

To be fair, I did get the parents to fork out for a school trip to Interlaken. My main memories of that are my best mate cutting herself on a razor blade whilst shaving her legs and we were sharing with a school from Caterham whose pupils got arrested for shoplifting.

So that was Daddy's cash well-spent.

Crikey - the best we got was a sweaty bus to Fort Vindolanda!

Our school went to Interlaken too, I didn't go, didn't like the other kids that were going.

Was it the bus that was sweaty then?

In 1962 I went to Bruges in Belgium and Volendam in Holland. The best thing was seeing the Keukenhof Gardens ... probably spelt that wrong along with all the others ... :heehee:

Yeah, they had those roof vents on cantilever openers that leaked like sieves - as soon as the Webasto heaters got going on a run anything over a couple of miles, the windows would be running with condensation.

Yet, for some unknown reason, I have strangely fond memories of the Alexander M-Type and the Alexander Y-Type that I grew up with, and eventually ended up driving.

You hadn't - without looking, I think it was an RT maybe?

EDIT - now I've had a glance, its more like an RMC

A sweaty bus used to be the hallmark of a great trip back in my day.

I would like to point out that we were Not Posh despite trips to Switzerland and a trip to Vindolanda would have seemed like a jolly on a par with going to Pompeii at the time.

I'm sure it'd have been more fun if you'd been there. Not brought up in Caterham, were you?

I went on a school cruise to Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Christiansand in Norway. I had my 13th birthday on board and our Headmaster and his wife who travelled with us bought me a brooch which I still have. :)

I've had a three week holiday in Norway since then, it's such a beautiful place.

I must have gone to a poor school.

Furthest afield I ever went to was Flamingo Land, which was about 15 miles away. It happened so rarely we weren't sure if the bus returned to pick us up or it was a one way journey.

My first trip was at the age of 14 from Scotland to Altcar in Lancashire with the school CCF. Hard to believe these days but we travelled by train with each of us clutching a 3.03 rifle. Had a brilliant camp playing soldiers and blasting targets with sten guns, rifles and bren guns and getting slightly tiddly in the NAFFI.
Next school trip was to Austria for skiing, all the way by train and coach. Had a great time on the slopes and just as much fun chatting up the wenches in the hotel and sampling Austrian beer.

Oh, just remembered that my very first school trip was from Epsom to Runnymede. We sailed from London on HMS Daffodil - I've still got my autograph book signed by one of the crew.
