Is it worth getting it repaired or are these just junk once that happens, using it plugged into the TV at the moment.
    A right PITA.

Depends on the age of the device ? and what make, model and cpu it has ?
If its powerful one a repair might be worth it, you could ask some local pc repair shops for a quote.

Alternatively, you can pick up some decent new 19 or 21" free standing monitors for under £70 instead of the TV and use it more as a desktop ..?

I've got a pretty good monitor I could set it up with but I really want something I can move from room to room.
I might consider getting a cheap one just for internet use and then set this one up with the monitor.

What make and model is your laptop @pete?

Screen faults can vary wildly, with repair costs varying similarly - it could be as simple as a broken flexi between the screen and the motherboard - the cables themselves are £15-£30 (part only), or it could be something a lot more terminal such as backlights/backlight drivers (highly unlikely unless the laptop is steam driven :heehee:), or some sort of power supply or component level fault.

            Hi FC, Acer.
Packard bell Easynote TE69KB if that means anything?

Was using it and the screen just went black, I thought it was the heat but its still not working.

Hmmmm...... there is a known issue with some of those where the cable that connects the screen to the motherboard gets trapped in the hinge and simply tugs out of its socket. Plugging it back in resolves this, but you would need to pop the bottom off it to do so.

An IPS panel for it runs in around £35, so that is not deadly and as it is that type of screen that definitely confirms that it is not backlights or backlight drivers.

The trouble with any of these things is that you can't really tell what is going on until you dig into it a bit more, and if you are not confident to do it yourself it is the labour that kills you.

                OK thanks FC.

I might just take the back off sometime and see if there is anything obvious :lunapic 130165696578242 5:

If not I might have a look around to see what local pc repairs have to say.

Its a shame that carrier costs have gone so high, as I'd be more than happy to look at it for you (and hopefully fix it) for only the cost of the parts - but I reckon that carriage costs would be just silly for it nowadays

Before you attempt a repair, diy or trader, make sure you have backed up all your data/pics etc and taken a system backup if needed, so if your Hard Disc gets clobbered you do not loose it all.

There are Ytubes showing how to diy replace the screen if you are that way inclined -
Not rocket science, you just have to be methodical and careful of not damaging the plastics, partic the ones that are just clipped together

                      IPS panel?

                      Is that a new screen?
