Congratulations Nathan and Donna on the birth of your Sea Horses.I so love Sea Horses but alwys thought they were too difficult to keep let alone breed from but you have proved them wrong:yess::happydance::dancy:

I had been wondering whether you still had them especially after seeing the chooks you now have so you must have read my mind now that you have put up the piccies:DI expect the Sea Horse shops will be glad to take them off of your hands when they are big enough, just make sure they give you a good price for them:mute::D

How wonderful! They look delightful. Do you have the father? (Do I understand correctly that the Dads give birth?) Look forward to seeing them grow up.

Unfortunately, the survival rate for Seahorses is so low, we have had about 5-6 batches of horses now since keeping them, but haven't (YET!!!) had one survive past a week.

        Chris,

Correct, the female deposits the eggs into the males pouch, gestation is between 14-28 days (roughly) and them the Male crunches his pouch and releases the babies.

Sometimes he will release a few, a couple of days before the full release, which at least gives you a chance at catching the release.

This morning we just struck lucky that Donna looked in just as he must have started :D

I'll update this as we go along, but I do try to be a realist and though I'd like loads to survive, if I set my expectatuons low, I'll be happy if any survive.

Seahorses can be kept in captivity with no real problems, but you just have to follow a few things when setting up the aquarium for them, if the aquarium is setup right, keeping them is really no more difficult than any other marine fish (I do have 2 other Marine tanks as well :D )

Seahorses will give birth in a home aquarium if they are happy in their surroundings. This is one of the problems with Public Aquariums, they try to instill it into you, that it is harder than it actually is. Don't get me wrong, there is more to it than a Goldfish in a bowl, but with the same as gardening, you get out of it what you put in :)

        Thank you both

        Well done.

I've my fingers crossed that you'll get a few babies to survive.

I'll tell Donna about her compliment

For such a small area, an aquarium can really provide so many photo opportunities.

Aren't they amazing creatures? I do hope at least some of them survive, Nathan.

I was lucky enough to get some baby platys once - was just on my way out to work and already late when I noticed this bubble go up the the surface and then down again! I realised it was a fry and was able to quickly scoop up the mother and put her in a floating chamber I had. They all survived.

A while later, I then found that my pair of gouramies had made a bubble nest and was able to transfer that and the parents into a separate small tank. They hatched okay and survived for about three weeks but then I decided the water was getting a bit yukky and decided to change it - bad move! Not one survived!
