I don't know if anyone else has this plant in their garden but it's one I like........Solomon's Seal [Polygonatum].

It is, to me, very unusual in it's shape as it grows before it flowers. The flowering period is short around a month but the flowers are so unusual in shape down from the tip like a string of white pearls. It's a plant that all visitors to my garden stop, look and ask what it is making it a curiousity and a talking point.

There is a similar looking plant called False Solomon's Seal [Smilacina racemosa] which is this one:[IMG]

It looks similar in growth but the flowers are feathery white plums instead of string of pearls, still a nice plant.:snork:

I have a small clump in the garden but unfortunately every year it gets shredded by saw flys:mad:

Yeah, that's their one enemy, lolimac. But I learnt my lesson after the first attack and have always kept an eye on them while doing a Lily Beetle patrol:paladin:. Also in the last at least 4 years I haven't even seen a saw fly caterpillar:yes:

I would love to own a couple of these but do they really thrive in full shade like some books say?

I have these in my garden and find that i have to pick off the little caterpillars before they take hold.I also brought a minature type last year which I split up and kept potted up in the greenhouse last year over winter and am pleased to say that two of the plants have survived and are now in flower with their small flowers although i keep forgetting to take a photo of them:biggrin:

My Solomon's Seal is in one of the main borders, JJ, but I have a sneaky feeling that they will do okay in shade....how heavy is another matter:snork:
