An old friend of mine has asked me to grow Scotch Tomatoes for him,a variety him and his wife used to get, famous for the minty smell of the leaves so ideal for Salads.
I cannot find any mention of them anywhere.
    Any help appreciated :help:

thanks all ..so far no luck but i have set an e-mail to the british tomato growers assoc.
was hoping there would be somewhere like the potato council, where they grow all breeds of spuds so they dont become extinct.. they even grow the lumper. that was the irish potato famine spud.

That site sounds like it's probably more for the likes of commercial growers (who don't tend to grow heirloom varieties), rather than an advice bureau for amateur growers:

So you should have a better chance getting something from Heritage Seed Library or seeking advice from a tomato forum like Tomatoville.

Neil, I can`t say I`ve ever heard of a tomato with mint scented leaves and I certainly wouldn`t eat the leaves as they are toxic. Get your friends to supply more information.

As Dai says, tomato leaves are poisonous.

I'm wondering if 'Scotch tomatoes' are actually tomatoes at all, or something that is locally known as scotch tomatoes. In much the same way as an asparagus pea is neither asparagus nor pea, or a sweet potato is not a potato.

I think it is a missunderstanding, Living in Scotland we have SCOTCH TOMATOES
It just means they were GROWN in Scotland as opposed to HOLLAND/SPAIN treetreetreetree

The same as in Enland the supermarkets sell HOME GROWN TOMATOES, but none of them state the actual variety

thanks i know the leaves are toxic ,but the mint comes through the skin,
And scotch is a variety of tomato. Not like Scotch egg.

I think I read it wrong Neil. Seeing " famous for the minty smell of the leaves " I assumed they were using the leaves for salads, obviously I was mistaken.
