Are you intending to pay for it Pam? as the free Avast Home Edition is a perfectly effective bit of kit and I've never purchased an Antivirus software ever... another good free alternative is Microsoft Security Essentials

I still got viruses with Microsoft Security Essentials, so I recommend you steer clear of that one. Norton is okay, but McAfee is a real pain when it comes to blocking legit programs. I have to turn the firewall off in order for it to let me watch videos online!!

The purpose of an antivirus program is to detect and then remove viruses not stop you from getting them you are just as likely to get a virus with Nortan Antivirus or any other of the multitude of programs...

Thing is, we all know windows is not as good as it could be, no, really it isnt. So why would you trust a programme from the people who made the programme that no one should be able to write a virus for in the first place.

To me, its like asking the police to investigate the the police, and then wondering why there is "nothing wrong"

There will always be viruses for any operating system there coded by humans exploiting holes created accidentally (unless it's for the US government...) by other humans.

Notice even apple has now removed their ludicrous slogan of "We don't get PC viruses" because they started getting a bigger market share there now being target more often

MSE dose a fairly decent job and if it didn't work then none of the other Antivirus software makers would of been in uproar when Microsoft released it...

in the end it's all down to personal preference Avast, AVG, MSE they all do the same basic thing in the end you can't beat good old common sense :blue thumb:

In the past I've tried a range of antivirus suites, and still had to spend hours from time to time eradicating a troublesome virus. Touch wood, I haven't had any problems since switching to MSE about 2 years ago.

The biggest hole in Windows is actually the fact most people run it under an account that has administrator priveleges. That means malware is just one little hurdle away from getting unrestricted access to your machine. Best set up a user account with limit rights, use that one most of the time, and only log in as admin when you want to install something new or make some other system change.

I bought this computer in Cyprus it has many add ons ,win rar/office/nero all added for free when purchased, the only instruction is do not up date as you will have to pay, they put avast on recommended, They also recommended not to install microsoft updates as they can create problems.

Pam, as I'm definitely not a computer buff I may be wrong - but it sounds as though they have given you pirated versions of all the software. That is usually the only reason for not updating.
