Hello! My seeds often seem to be growing with the seed cases stuck to them, which is hampering the leaf development. What could I be doing wrong?

Usually its a sign of the seeds not being sown deep enough.
But sometimes it can be a problem when you need to surface sow.

In that case a very humid atmosphere for a couple of days after germination often stops the seed case drying out and can often be shed by the seedling.

Once the seed case drys out, its there for good.

This happens every now and then to my sowings . I thought you could just gently remove them ?

You can sometimes @HarryS , or leave them if they are not strangling the cotyledons, but I've found it can, in extreme cases, actually stop the seedling developing, and they die.

Pretty rare though, and usually something that you paid through the nose for and only got half a dozen seeds.

Thanks! I think you're probably right about not sowing deeply enough, I've managed to gently pull the cases off most of them but it's a nightmare when you've sowed ten trays worth! X

Yes I have had it where the case holds the cotyledons closed , luckily only on a few non essential sowings.

Keep misting them with a hand sprayer will soften the seed case and help the cotyledons push it off naturally. It doesn't always work but will help most if you have a large batch like that.
