Is there a solution to germinating Exotics that benefit from wide temperature differences for Day/Night?

I don't have a fancy propagator, but do they come with thermostat that do dual-temperatures based on a 24 hours timer?

If not would, for example, a light bulb [on a timer] in the propagator to raise the "day" temperature do the trick?

I've done it manually, in the past, moving the seed trays from Hot to Temperate, but some days they got all "day" and others all "night" temperatures 'coz I'm pretty hopeless at doing things to-a-routine ...

Someone on here posted this idea last year, sorry can't remember who:

Use a cheap mechanical timer and set it to switch on/off at 1/2 hour intervals overnight (then full on all day). I did this in the spring and it worked well, typically getting 5 deg C cooler at night.

That's the essence of a cracking good idea. Blindingly obvious, but I never thought of it!!

I actually have a timer with little "fingers" around the 24 hours and they are 15 minutes each - so I could toggle 15:15 at night, or even 15:30 or 15:45 if that would be needed to get the temperature down low enough.

Thanks John. Seeds are arriving soon :)

I set mine up without seeds and ran it for a couple of nights to get it 'tuned', sound like you have time to test the idea too.

Slight flaw in the plan is that I also have to buy the propagator!

I do the same, but my propagator is inside the house which is not that cold at night. So I just use a time switch to turn the heat on during the day. Seems to work.
