    Hi,

We planted some various seedlings a bit ago and put them right next to different windows. These included guava, rocket and chilli pepper. Some of them have done something but the others are just not doing a thing:

I ended up eating my rocket sprouts; they hardly grew at all then flopped over and started wilting. They didn't even reach 2cm height (although they tasted nicer than supermarket-bought even when they grew so poorly).

The chilli peppers are growing slowly, but one isn't growing at all. It sprouted to a few cms tall but just sits there with the seed pod on its head. It appears not to be growing any more roots either. It was having problems breaking through the soil so I put it in different soil ages ago, and it has hardly done anything since.

Maybe my guavas need a bit of room, but they aren't growing very fast at all. Most still have seed pods on their head.

What is causing this please? They've decided to sprout so I'm not sure why they've stopped now.

Hi, I have grown some chilli peppers this year they are a very slow germinator. Not sure if it was the right thing to do or not but it worked for me. I kept them very moist and popped them into the airing cupboard for a couple of hours a day. Important not to let them dry out though! Now i have two or three big bushy plants with lots of chillis on. Keep them in a sunny position once they have started to appear. Chillis thrive in the sun and heat.

Alrighty then; I live in the UK. All my plants live indoors. The conditions allow me to grow passionflowers, tomatoes, coleus, chives, parsley, mini red peppers and basil successfully.

Rocket - seeds planted in multi-purpose compost in a small pot. Placed on a windowsill. I don't know how to grow these successfully at all!

Guava - seeds planted in multi-purpose compost in a small pot, with a rambutan seed! Placed on a windowsill (opposite side of the house to the rocket). I've now placed them in their own pot with sand and compost. The largest one is a few cms tall and juuust has a few secondary leaves. I mist them once or twice a day. Are they always slow growers or are they lacking heat or something? The rambutan is happy as Larry.

Chillis - seeds were planted in some strange dried compost that you add water to and it expands to fill the pot. They weren't breaking through that very well so I transferred the seedlings into multi-purpose. One has gone bye bye and never really grew good roots. Two others are still only a few cms. The largest one has a set of secondary leaves, the smaller one has small leaves and a seed pod hat. They were moved from the guava windowsill to near some balcony doors to see if it was sunlight, but they're still pretty slow. My normal peppers were slow compared to basil/ tomatoes, but these chillis are super slow. Should they be growing this slowly?

Do you think there might be something wrong with your compost JWunivers.
Last year I planted my seeds in peat free compost. They germinated alright then just sat there doing nothing. I had to transplant them all on then they got on fine.

This year I have a problem with Delphiniums. I planted them a while ago at the same time as Hollyhocks to grow them on for next year.
The hollyhocks got on fine, big strong plants now ready for planting out.
The Delphiniums were slow to germinate (I think that's normal) and they just sit there doing nothing with about 1 true leaf. In fact I think they look as if they are fading away. I've not much hope for them. Am I missing something with these plants ?

As far as I am aware Guavas need hot, humid conditions. Are you sure it was compost you used for the Chillis or was it sphagnum moss peat?:gnthb:

I'm positive it was multi-purpose compost; all I have is multi-purpose compost, sand, and perlite.
