I have planted 2 rows of carrots and 2 rows of parsnips in my allotment and not one seedling has come up. The seeds were not old and the ground has been kept moist. Can anyone tell me why this happens?

I have also planted several rows of lettuce/spring onions/rocket in my garden. The first lot (bar the spring onions) came up and am using but successive rows just fail to germinate. Any suggestions?

I've had problems recently with germination as well. Although you are keeping the ground moist I wouldn't mind betting the weather has just been too hot. (Don't know where you are in the country though).

Out of a row of carrots - 2 came up.

Out of a row of little gem - 1 came up.

    Spring onions? Forget it !

I know for sure lettuce wont germinate when the temperature is too high, willing to bet its not helping with the others also.

The usual reason for direct sown seeds failing to germinate is sowing too deep.:thumb:
