Lots of ways to do it from whitewashing to using tinted glass. I use greenhouse netting which is a green plastic mesh, you hang it up inside in front of the glass so dappled shade gets through. Easy to put up before the sun gets really hot in summer and easy to take down when its cooler.

Its much better to put the shade cloth/netting outside the glazing if you can.
Otherwise it acts as a solar collector..heating the greenhouse

I don't shade mine at all. Careful ventilation seems to work for me (Toms, Cues and Melon predominantly - if you have some exotics or pot plants / flowers might be different.

Also, I think it is much harder to control a small greenhouse than a large one.

I have a couple of small greenhouses: 6X8 and 8X8 and the temp is very difficult to control, even with shading and both vents and door wide open it still gets over 30 deg C in the summer - thats far too hot.

Well I always use that whitewash stuff, but as I said it still gets a bit too hot. Its only a couple of weeks in our normal summer when it gets too hot - so I'm not too bothered to do anything else - I'd like to use some netting to drape over the outside like Hex suggests, but I have never tried it and am a bit worried it will blow away (I'm not sure what or where to buy it).

Good links and ideas - thanks kristen.

Last year I thought about buying one of these Solar Car Coolers/Fans just as an experiment to try and get some air movement:

They are very cheap (less than £10 on ebay) and I reckon could be easily fitted in place of a glass panel in the greenhouse. They are probably under powered but its not much money to lose if it doesn't work.

I wonder if anyone has actually used one in their car?

Another option is to install some overhead misters and put them on a timer, 1-3 seconds on and 60-90 seconds off.
Evaporative cooling is a lot more effective than running exhaust fans especially if its 30C outside

Good idea Hex, I've got an automatic watering system already and only use it first thing in the morning - all I have to do is change the timer to come on a few times during the day - I can't wait for those hot summer days to try that idea out - Thanks!

I`m not sure if the auto watering system would do the same job but its definitely worth a bash.
Misting heads generally put out a very fine fog which evaporates instantly so nothing actually gets wet.

My watering system is a hose with lots of tiny holes that produce a fine spray, so hopefully that will have a similar effect.

    Hi John
I`m going for a more radical approach for cooling but i think a combination of shade cloth, misting and ventilation should be very effective :)
Always assuming we get a summer, that is

I got some shade material a few years ago it has aluminium woven into it and this reflects half the sunlight that hits it,anytime now the bubble wrap comes out the material goes on the outside on cuphooks top and bottom it seems the perfect solution,,it was quite expesive at the time but well worth it. Here's a link to a supplier,
