    This corner of my garden is now permanently in the shade due to the tree in the picture ( which no one at my local garden centre seems to be able to identify). I was going to turf it but am sure that this will just be a waste of time. I tried seeding it last year but the grass eventually died away again (shady area grass seed). So instead, I thought I might simply dig away the corner, thus creating a new bed. It will only be about a metre and a half square.
    Does anyone have any thoughts on possible plants to put in? I love ferns so will probably get a few of them but would also like other plants if poss. Any suggestions? I have googled it but I always like to ask people on here as I really value their opinion; it's nice to actually feel you have 'talked' to someone.
    I have no idea why my photos always seem upside down!

    Forget turfing it Mark , it will be difficult to establish and maintain. I have a shadey area which I am trying to plant up a little better this year.
    Look at ..............
    Hostas
    Skimmia
    Acanthus
    Brunnera ( Great forget me not ) Just planted it this morning !

      I personally would avoid Ajuga as it walks like crazy here!

      A couple more;
      Polygonatum hybridum.....................
      [IMG]

      Uvularia grandiflora.................

      Both are spring bloomers (as is Viola labradorica, which also walks and self seeds but personally I prefer it to Ajuga).

      Lobelia erinus always seems to grow well in hanging baskets in shade, so that may be worth a punt? As is Nicotiana langsdorfii. I grow Impatiens balfourii in deep shade.

        Yes, another shady area here as well, I have decided to go for a Hosta, though I agree that Brunnera is rather nice as well.

        I would like to remove Pulmonaria from the list:snork:. Grows like an absolute weed here! Lily of the Valley is rather invasive too, but easily controlled with a trowel when it gets too bad. But Pulmonaria self seeds like crazy, and the seeds are viable for a long time as I dug it all out two years ago!

        Thanks for all the suggestions! Def something to think about. I've got ajuga growing in my border already (second year) and I love the flowers... So do the bees! I think I am going to go for a mixture of ferns and a couple of others from the list. I just adore ferns...think they look beautiful.
        Here are the requested leaves of my mysterious tree!
