I am going to grow some shallots from seed this year and will if they turn out O.K.be putting them in the local show, when is the best time to sow them in the greenhouse for a show in August? prior to planting out,I live on the coast in S.W Scotland and suffer some fairly cold winds in spring which tends to hold veg back a bit so I would like to give them a good growing period.

    Hi Phoebe,

You can start the seeds in two periods really.

One for overwintering where the shallots will be ready about June-July, with the seeds started off around September and the other is spring sowing, seeds started off anytime from January to March where the shallots will be ready August-September.

SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME IF I'M WRONG!

It's hard to give an exact sowing date as the weather can speed up or slow down the harvesting times. I'd personally sow 5 seeds per week from January to March. You will then be covering yourself, there's bound to be one of those batches ready in time.

Hi Craig thanks for that, would those suggested sowing times be under glass or straight into the veg plot?

Definitely under cover either in a greenhouse or polytunnel. Just make sure they get plenty of light
