shallots

    thinking of growing some shallots zebrune from seed ,if i do will they produce decent size bulbs in the first year?

    Yes they do, but you need to get moving and best sown in a greenhouse, in trays and sow three or four seeds in each cell, then transplanted in April.
    I've grown them before and normally sow in early Feb.

      I like this variety, they are easy to grow and very tasty plus they store exceptionally well. I started mine a few weeks ago as they do need a long season to make a decent sized bulb.

      You sow and harvest in the same year. If you leave them in the ground for the following year they just run to seed.

        Thanks for the reminder the little gardening shop I used to get shallot sets from has closed ( building luxury retirement apartments on the site". This year will plant saved shallots and maybe go with seed next year.
