I have a selection of roses growing in the garden, they seem to be at different stages and a variety of types, but all appear to be growing fairly well. Some of them have what looks like a large greyish brown root exposed (almost looks dead compared to the rest of the plant). A neighbour advised me to cover the roots with a pile of ground to protect it. I did this, but then my mother-in-law came along and said she thought they shouldn't be covered like that because they might rot. So who's right?
