Just purchased 6 pieces of edging from a local B&Q.

They were stacked on top of each other in a trolley - under a bag of compost.

I told that cashier that there were 6. He counted them himself and stated there were 5 pieces and charged me accordingly.

Now I could have said "No, there are 6, you need to charge me for 6" - but I paid the bill and walked out.

I'm now feeling a pang of guilt about this :frown: - but it would be a bit embarrassing to go back there.

Forget about it, hardly think that B & Q are going to go broke over a bit of edging!!

Do they have a charity box? If you feel to embarrassed to "fess up" you could make a donation next time you're in.
That is, unless they're waiting for you with armed police ready to pounce:yikes::snork:

You said that there were 6 so that shows honourable intention. I would let it go.

People should really be able to count these days although I'd avoid that particular branch of B&Q for now . There's probably a WANTED picture of you on the wall. :snork:

A slightly different tale. I was in Tescos and they had a good wine offer on. I decided to buy 4 cases of the wine I wanted, there were 6 bottles on wine in each box. I took 1 bottle out of one of the cases, gave it to the teller and said I have 4 boxes of the same wine, "fine" says she. I get my bill which had a fair dose of other shopping on it, not just the wine and thought it seemed a bit low. I paid what was asked and walked away from the till and had a look at the bill. The teller had only charged me for 4 bottles not four boxes ie 24 bottles.
I went to customer services and explained my bill was well under what it should have been. The response.....not "thanks for being honest" instead "Oh this will cause me a bit of extra paperwork, you should just have kept quiet about it and done us both a favour".
I sarcastically said "oh I'm so sorry for being honest, I won't bother in future" You could have knocked me down with a feather, hey ho.

@clanless, I wouldn't worry about it, you told her there were 6 & she charged you for 5 it's not strictly your fault! I have had the same sort of thing happen to me on two occasions in B&Q, firstly I bought 2 composers you know the plastic ones, I slid one over the other to enable me to carry it easier, I'd also bought a lot of other stuff when I got home hubby said that was a good price, I didn't think anymore of it until he checked the reciept & noticed we had only been charged for one, but I had told the girl & I was holding the two lids in my hand & I'd placed them on the checkout! The second time was a table & 4 chairs, I told the girl what I had on the trolley & she scanned the boxes, again I didn't notice until I got home I'd only been charged for 3 chairs! Neither time did I go back it's about 9 miles to my B&Q, yes I felt guilty but I didn't intentionally steel the stuff & wouldn't I was undercharged I vote you just keep the stuff & know it wasn't your fault. I generally put some money in a charity box when this happens :dbgrtmb:

Theft is not intending to pay for something, i.e. outright stealing.

I think you misunderstood my post. He told the cashier that he had 6 items i.e. he didn't lie or could foresee that the cashier would charge him for 5. As far as I am concerned it is a grey area since it was the cashier who was at fault. You make it sound so cut and dried with no accounting for the innocent circumstance. I see 2 options:

                          1) Think that helps to make to up for all the times you've been overcharged in shops and not noticed until it's been too late, or not bothered because the cost of fuel taking it back would've exceeded the overcharge, or you lost a receipt for something that failed, etc., etc.

                          or

                          2) Take the 6th piece of wood and beat yourself with it until you feel better about it.

I know what I would do!

Well, here's the legal interpretation of theft, clanless,
                              1. "(1) A person is guilty of theft by deception when the person obtains property or services. of another by deception with intent to deprive the person thereof. A person deceives. when the person intentionally: (a) Creates or reinforces a false impression, including false impressions as to law,"
I think we can all agree that you did not breach the above, so you can breathe more easily, I think:coffee::heehee:

Good evening you can dress it up anyway you like, and have as many grey area's as you want, but it is still dishonest, all people make mistakes. That doesn't make it morally right to take advantage of those mistakes for personal gain at someone else's expense.so we will have to agree to disagree ,looks like I'm on my own here, must be a generation thing:old::heehee:
