I would like some advice please, I have cleared the weeds from my herb garden, put black membrane down around my herbs. I have a lot of connifer cuttings from where I cut the hedges, if I put this through the shredder would it be OK to put this on top of the membrane?

It's OK to put on top of membrane but you're more likely to get other plants germinating, eventually, in it because it's shredded (unless it's shredded very coarsely). Not a problem if you intend changing it each year or so. Wood chippings are easier to look after. :blue thumb:

    Hi Sciffy,

I hope you don't mind but I've got a similar question and I think it ties in nicely with yours.

If I cut branches off a conifer can I use these to lay over tender plants as extra winter protection ?

Anything laid over tender plants will help but I would be a bit loathe to lay conifer branches as they're fairly heavy and may damage them. If they're really tender plants then a better organised arrangement should be made - fleece or other protection.
